Dell QudaCore arrived

My QudaCore Dell is finally arrived. And instantly I saw the sick sad problem with Norton Security suite. It took forever to uninstall it.

I am still in the process of uninstalling all the junk. Once down, I'll start doing some torture test on the box.

Disappointed. Sigh.

DazStudio 1.7 green unfriendly

Sigh, the old one is so green friendly .... nevermind.

Finally got Chinese Handwriting working for my Windows MObile 6

I finally got Chinese Handwriting (MonsterChinese 6) working on Windows Mobile 6. The recognition was a bit slugglish with Word, but it works pretty well with NotePad.

This could be just a trial version, but I'll settle with it for a while.

By the way in order to install HandWriting recognition I need to get to use version 5.x of SIP .

I also found that Windows Mobile 6 use the Build-In-Storage to install application, which is a good thing since it will freeup save from the actually memory.

I am now trying out the Resco 6 product line.

Ultra slow PPC2K3 problem seems to be resolved by itself.

After I endure the painful process of setting up the 2K3, the PDA is back to normal speed now. Strangely, I didn't do nothing special. Why the ....

And yes that broken Contact button is still ... errr... broken.

And the internal stored memory was all wiped out.

Well since I already went this far ... maybe I can give DELL_x50v_A03_ROM.rar a try.

ActiveSync 4.5, and my Chinese instllation nightmare.

I got a lot of pain with the Windows Mobile 6 running Axim x50v since I tried to install Chinese input on it. I finally got to a point that I am rolling things back to the very beginning. Right now I have PocketPC 2K3SE firmware downgrading in process.

To downgrade the OS back to 2K3SE do the following:
- expand AximX50v_WM2k3_A05_EN.rar to an SD card
- rename
DiMa_B_A05_X50v_WM2k3_ENG_nb0.crc to WM50_B_A05_X50v_WM2k3_ENG_nb0.crc
and
DiMa_B_A05_X50v_WM2k3_ENG.nb0 to WM50_B_A05_X50v_WM2k3_ENG.nb0
(and left the other 2 alone)
- Use hot key to switch to SD rom loading mode
- apply the BootLoader first.
- restart
- Now apply the WM2K3.
- When finished. Reboot.

I just found out that the rolled back OSseems to be very very slow.

The reason for this roll back was that none of the Chinese input worked with WM6.
I tried:
- CE-Star 2.8 R3a for WM356Treo CAB
- CE-Star Suite 2.8
- MonsterChinese_V6

They all failed.

Finally got Windowd Mobile 6 talking to Vista

I finally got the Windows Mobile 6 on my DELL Axim x50v talks to the Windows Vista on my Lenovo X60T. Here's the steps:

1. Pair up the two device.
2. On the Windows Mobile 6 device, select [Programs][ActiveSync]. Follow the instruction and set up ActiveSync to use the Bluetooth connection.

Update x50v from Pocket PC 2003 SE to Windows Mobile 6

I knew it will take me a LOT Of time in order to install Windows Mobile 6 on my DELL x50v, but I didn't realize that it will take so MUCH of my time.

It all started when I found this web site mentioning the existing of Windows MObile 6 hacked ROM for Dell x50v. That got very excited, and so I downloaded the ROM and started trying it on 3 p.m. However, after 2 hours of struggling, I finally realized that the PocketPPC 2003SE Firmware update doesn't work with the SDCard based bootup because it the file is in .img format instead of the .nbo with checksome file. And I couldn't use the official DELL update as I already broke my cradle and thus impossible to charge and connect at the same time. That means I HAVE to find the SDCard firmware update solution.

After hours of googling, I finally found this awesome site that hosted the ROMs. And then I read this site to understand more about what file I need to rename in order to make the firmware update works. I also read more about the file name and the meaning with this site.

This is the photo of the firmware update.

And this is what it's like when the process is done.

And here's the exact steps that I did. The whole process took took about 20 minutes, so be patient. In fact, this is probably the whole reason why Dell forced me to have AC connected to my Pocket PC during the firmware update process. Because it really took THAT LONG time!

Follow these steps:

(1) Expand AximX50v_WM2k3_A05_EN.rar
(2) Rename the files:
WM5_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0 to DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
and
WM5_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc to DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
(3) Put all four files into SD card (root).
(4) Hold power and WiFi button, and then press the hard reset hole once.

Continue holding the WiFi button and power button for a second, and then

release.
(5) You will see the screen prompt you to seelct "DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG" press action button twice, and it will start loading. This is actually the WM5 bootloader.
(6) Once done, you will be prompted to reboot.
(7) Now delete all files in SD card (using your PC), and put the WM6 files in the SD card (2 files, by expanding img-47279-X50v_WM60_A01.rar .
(8) Boot up loader using sequence illustrated on step 4.
(9) pick the "WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM60_EN" entry, press action button twice and start the installing of Windows Mobile 6 firmware. It will take 20+ minutes to finish the whole process, so make sure you have AC connected to your PDA.
(10) After then reboot, and the Windows Mobile screen will come up. There will be 30 second or so idle time, so don't panic. After then it will be the regular Windows Mobile setup sequence.
(11) Done. Now you have Windows Mobile 6 running on your Dell x50v. Enjoy!

I tried WiFi with Pocket IE. Seems to work pretty well.

My next two challenge will be installing Chinese input and make Bluetooth working.

Messing with Painter X

Painter X is a powerful application, but somehow it's also a buggy application that gave me so much hard time when user it.

- Strange disappearing of Frame Stacks
I found out a strange bug of Painter X: if you stopped the loading of avi file in the middle of the process, you will still get portion of the video converted into stack, but you will lost the Frame Stack Palette. In fact, there's NO WAY to bring bring back the Frame Stack Palette unless you quit the application and start it again.

- Frame rate
There seems to be NO WAY to specify the frame rate of the video being imported. The navigation on the animation stacks are also pretty lame.

- Import format
Painter X seems to be very picky on video file format. I tried importing movies in .wmv (asf format), MPEG 4, and other avi formats and they all failed. I have to use WinAVI Video Converter application, set the video encoder to Microsoft Video 1 and Audio to PCM, and convert my .wmv to .avi in order to import the video in Painter X.

Comparing WallPaper Changer and Wallpaper Slideshow LT

Both Wallpaper Slideshow LT and WallPaper Changer does the basic job well pretty well. In fact Wallpaper Slideshow LT support different wallpaper on different monitor. However, since my laptop screen is 4:3 while to external monitor is widescreen, the wallpaper got scretched in a strange way. But the biggest porblem of Wallpaper Slideshow LT is that it does not automatically change the font color of icons on the desktop to create a bigger contrast between the wallpaper color and and the font color.

That's why I still stick with WallPaper Changer on Vista.

XBox 360 price dropped, but ...

Yeah tempting... but then I have tons of other stuff to do, including playing with my Wii :> So .... wait .. or skip .. .like how to skipped the whole Playstation 2 generation ....

Another bunch of reason why I should not buy a MacMini Core2Duo edition

Here's another set of of reason why shouldn't buy MacMini Core2Duo Edition
  • Wait for someone who can buy it for me using student discount.
  • The price of getting it in US, after tax, is more expansive than getting it in HK. Maybe I should wait til I have a vacation to Hong Kong and then grab it there.
  • Wait for OSX Leopard
  • Graphic sucks, and darn it majority of the stupid I use it with are GRAPHIC related.
  • Simply too hard to upgrade.
  • May not work with some of my USB Gear
  • Got too many stuffs to do already, and should be distracted by learning yet another set of application on the Mac.
  • NTFS support is still lame, although Parallel may solve the problem
Well, enough bashing.

Messed up default application setting on Vista

The default application for graphic files was messed up after I move all my portable apps from one drive to another drive. EVen when I tried to re-register my FSViewer as the default JPEG viewer again and again, the system just didn't register it.

Finally I resolved the problem by opening regedit, and delete all the FSViewer entries. Once done I set the JPEG default viewer again and boom, all is well now.
