Eee Slate and Bluetooth problem

The suddenly Bluetooth dropping problem on Eee Slate EP-121 is getting to a very annoying level.  In fact, a while ago, it just stopped working all the sudden.  And this time simply toggling the wireless mode on the OS didn't work.  I had to turn off and turn on both the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  It just annoys the HELL out of me.

Reminding myself why I still hates Eee Slate EP-121

With Windows 8 Pro final released, Traditional Chinese input available, Windows Media Center work fine, I found that almost all my problem with Asus Eee Slate EP-121 previous was gone.  I almost felt like I can start living Eee Slate.  Sure, it's heavy, but at least it's functional, it's full feature, and the touch worked very well, right?

Then, just like all the love relationship, eventually you will find something you don't like.  And here's the list of reason why I still like my Eee Slate:

  • Bluetooth may suddenly stopped working.  This is what pissed me the most, and it seemed like frequently happening after I used USB device, like USB thumb drive.  The solution is to go to [PC Setttings][Wireless], and then turn on Airplane mode, and then turn on Wifi and Bluetooth again.  The bluetooth will then back in function.  Still, it's just SOOOOOOo anonying.
  • Weight.  Yes, it's still heavy.
  • AutoRotation button doesn't work consistently.
  • Short short battery life.
When I buy my new windows 8 device, I need to keep these bullet points in mind.

Finally Rooted my Nexus 7, but ...

So I received the OTG USB Cable I ordered a while ago, and then realized that even with OTG USB Cable won't work with my Nexus 7 unless I rooted it.

I've been resisting not rooting my Nexus 7 for so long, but finally, the using of thumb drive and a full backup give me enough reason to root it.  So I following the instruction here.  But it didn't work.  I tried again and again using Google Nexus 7 Toolkit 3.2.0 to install Fastboot driver, but it just didn't work (the serial didn't show up).

After being frustrated for a while, (which along the way I learned how to boot to Fastboot Mode) I tried option 3 under Fastboot Mode, which is unlock the bootloader.  Turns out that worked out fine, and I also got the device rooted.  I tried StickMount and it worked great.  All seemed well exception one thing: the device was WIPED FRESH.  That means I need to reinstall all the application!  This is fine, cause I would like a fresh start so that I can learn how to do backup properly anyway.

I also decided to ONLY rooted Nexus 7 cause I want to experience the difference between using a rooted and a non-rooted phone.  That means I will probably continue to use Nexus 7 to do all kind of crazy adventure.  That make sense since I need a stable device (my phone) daily use and a development device (one that I can try all kinds of crazy stuff during development).

Owning just about right among of devices

Just most gadget lovers, I used to just keep buying new devices, especially when I can easily afford them financially.  But then there's all kind of maintenance cost associate with every single one of those devices.  Just keep them all charge up so that you can use them whenever you wanted to would cost you some serious time.

In fact I think I just reached that limit.  Here's the signs to indicate that you should stop buying any new gadget for a while:

  • Your existing gadget can do everything your soon-to-be-brought gadget does.
  • You are getting tried of chagring tons of devices every day.
  • You don't have a car, and you find yourself carrying a lot of gadget around.
  • You start to dig up old gadgets and think "hey, this one does exactly what I need to do"
  • The "feature" duplication problem among your gadgets start getting serious.

Windows 8 N can't access Music and Video WinRT App

Because of the EU ruling, Microsoft has to release N edition of Windows to Europe countries.  Windows 8 is no exception, and thus the existence of Windows 8 N.  Microsoft was kind enough to release something called "Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 8" and thus add back the Windows Media Player on the desktop side for Windows 8.  Unfortunately, you still cannot install the Music and Video app, which is like ultra stupid.
