Spellchecker on OpenOffice was not working

I am using the OpenOffice 1.1.2 Write application preinstalled on CentOS 4.2, and I found that the spelling checker didn't change my mis-spelled word even after I click the [Change] button (or something like that). That pissed me off, so I was trying to download and install the new OpenOffice 2.0. Well I sort of completed the installation as instructed, but still don't know how to start the OpenOffice 2.0. Linux is so new a beast to me that I really have hard time figuring out how to make it work. :-<
