Nintendog - Better play in Power Saving mode

It seems to me that if I am serious about playing Nintendog, like walking the dog a lot, or join competition a lot, I better play the game in power saving mode (leave the machine on by closing the lid instead of turning off the machine. Otherwise the Nintendog will not proceed the virtual day in the game, and I will have problem walking the dog more often to get more prizes.
